Granny Square Heaven

Link is to a pdf document (found it on Ravelry originally) that has LOTS of really pretty granny squares… both intricate and simple. Definitely worth a look if you like that sort of thing.

FYI

The whole ‘glue’ thing really does stiffen up a knit/crochet item quite well!  Tried my earrings on after work yesterday… and they are quite cute!  Now the downside is - they are most definitely stiff, so you better shape everything exactly how you want it.  Also - the colors will get just a teeny bit duller from the glue.

There are other methods to stiffen your work (sugar water solution or starch) but supposedly they have similar side effects.

Anyhow - pictures soon.

Crochet Charts

So - we have previously covered knitting with charts, and using them for design purposes… BUT now it is time to think about crochet.  This is a very simple link about how to read crochet charts.

This weekend, I bought myself some earring hooks and more crochet thread with the promise of a new jewelry design.  I’m pretty decent at ad hoc crochet, but don’t pay enough attention to make two of the same thing! ha!  Kind of an issue with earrings :) .

Needless to say, I found myself on the internet desperately searching for how to write out crochet charts! This link is more about reading them… but you can easily use the symbols to design.  Don’t be fooled though, if your mind works in knitting charts and is used to straight lines - designing circular crochet earrings is mind boggling :) I’ll show you the results of my attempts soon!

SSK vs. K2 tbl

Random tidbit here…. In a lot of patterns people use these two methods interchangeably: SSK (slip slip knit) and K2 tbl (knit 2 through back loop). Both are methods of decreasing, both give you a leaning stitch like so: \ .

However, to me they are not equivalent. Typically I am using one of these stitches at the same time as I would use a K2tog (which would give you a leaning stitch in the other direction: /). K2tog is a very smooth decrease - almost seamless where to the naked eye you can’t tell that rows are converging.

Hence - the question is, which decrease is smoother for the other direction? My opinion is the SSK. It is a little more tedious and takes a bit more time… but it is such a cleaner look!

I know this is random :) but it was relevant to the scarf I’m working on now… Lacy Girl Scarf. Hope someone else finds it helpful!

Ravelry : Local Yarn Shop Directory

Ok - so this is totally unhelpful if you aren’t on Ravelry…

HOWEVER if you are :) then definitely check it out.  On the Yarns page, you can put in your zip code/city and Ravelry will pull up local yarn stores.  Most of them have reviews or ‘groups’ already, but you can learn a lot! It is worth it!

And if you aren’t on Ravelry and you knit or crochet… pull yourself together and ask for an invite :).  It will be the best thing you’ve done for your little knit/crochet portion of life :)

Spinning Basics: How to spin yarn with a spindle

This looks like it requires a lot of coordination…

I never could learn to drive a stick shift but hey - it can’t hurt to try!
