Happy Birthday to my mother-in-law today!
I wrapped up the dish cloths I made a week or so ago and off they went late last week.  I think the ‘total package’ turned out pretty cute!  Now I just have to see if I can convince her to actually use them… I know she’ll want to keep them pretty :) haha!!

Something to call my own

Awhile back I posted a picture of a dishcloth  that I made up designed with the promise that at some point I would share the pattern.  One thing I have learned is to graciously thank all pattern creators for their detail oriented nature…. However I have a confession - I am not quite that patient or attentive(shocker!).  I’d promise myself I’d pay attention, but then another episode of Bones comes on and I realize I’m crocheting away with no clue what number of chains I made.

Hence,  I’ll try to tell you my process rather than an exact dish cloth pattern…..

  • Chain an EVEN number of stitches ( I think I tried 26)
  • 1st row:   Skip first chain & Single Crochet into 2nd chain, Double Crochet in following chain, Repeat {Single Crochet (SC), Double Crochet (DC)} stitch pattern until end of chained row
  • 2nd row:  Chain 1 and turn work, Repeat {SC, DC} stitch pattern until end of row.  NOTE - You should be SC into every SC from the prior row, and DC into the DC from the prior row
  • 3rd row - ?:  Repeat Row 2 until desired length
  • Round 1:  Double Crochet in every row/stitch of the top/bottom/sides.  In the corners, DC- chain 2- DC, in same stitch
  • Round 2: Single Crochet in every stitch from the prior round, when you get to the corners do 3 single crochets into the chain space made in the prior round
  • My Visual Representation of main pattern (using example of 6 chain):

If you are making a washcloth sized version, just make sure you do enough rows to get a square.  I also tried this making into a hand-towel sized version, just continuing to add rows.

I plan on trying to follow this pattern at some point and see how it turns out.  I’ll edit the post with changes if need be :).  If you see any mistakes, can you please let let me know?

Starburst Stitch - Dishcloths
(This pattern turns out a thicker cloth that is a bit knobby and quite textured)

Dishcloth - my own pattern
(I’ll blog about this later, I’m going to try to make another one so that I can write it down properly… but this turned out to be my favorite! )

Oopsie!

Well I meant to tell ya’ll last week that I was going to be out of town (AGAIN) this past weekend… Another busy one and the last traveling I have to do for awhile- YAY!

The hubby and I were flying to Rhode Island for our friends’ wedding and left last Friday.  The wedding was in a castle in Newport (YES- I am serious) and was quite possibly one of the most amazing venues I’ve ever seen.  It was so full of antiques I was almost afraid to sit at the ceremony!  I took lots of amazing pictures - so maybe I’ll share a few…. old stuff counts as knit/crochet related, right? Right!

Seriously? Seriously!

Anyhow, I had all these great dreams of crocheting away in the airport and plane ride up on Friday… that is until I literally snapped my crochet hook in half while sitting in the airport waiting to board the plane! OOPS!!  It was a plastic one, and apparently I was taking out a bit too much agression on it :) haha.

Needless to say I spent part of Saturday morning driving around in our rental car searching desperately for a Walmart or Michael’s!  Luckily, I found the latter and got myself a nice less breakable aluminum hook for the trip home.  All in all, I still got a lot done - 3 more dish cloths finished!  I will take pics tonight and post!

Hope everyone had an amazing weekend!

The Star Stitch

Allrighty - so unsuccessful pattern numero dos last night on the dish cloth front!  Shoot!  I tried and tried to follow this ‘starburst’ pattern last night - I probably started over 4 times b/c it looked nothing like the picture.  God bless whoever posted that pattern because it is beautiful… but it doesn’t seem to be written clearly enough for a newbie (er… dummy) like me!  Watch the video - you don’t draw up two loops in the same stitch to make a star… it has to be drawn up in separate stitches.  Crochet… you are killing me so much fun!

Tonight, I will try again - and follow the video. Thank you YouTube.

Sugar & Cream

I don’t know if it is just me - but have you ever noticed that the people who actually post reviews on websites are either really positive or really negative?

Last night I tried out the first dishcloth pattern with the Sugar & Cream cotton yarn.  I have read some pretty horrible reviews about it being knotted and hard on your hands.  It is not that bad!  Yeah - it is cotton and therefore meant for durability not the softness of merino… but c’mon people!  It made a darn cute dishcloth with the sunny yellow and white mix I picked (on right in pic)… and it didn’t take an hour to do it… AND on top of that it only cost me $1.20!

NOW - the pattern on the other hand… I am still learning about crochet, but I found this one hard to decipher.  I know how to make the stitches, but the pattern didn’t seem to work out exactly right!  I tried it on scrap yarn first and then the new - and had issues both times.  It could just be my ‘learning curve’ but I think I’ll try the other pattern next time :)!

(Pictures coming soon)
