As promised… here is the chart for the Diamond Design repeat pattern!
You can repeat vertically and horizontally.  I plan on incorporating this into several upcoming projects, but I hope you enjoy or find a use for it!  Please click on the picture to download a larger version from my flickr account.

Repeating Pattern of the Diamond Design
I finally tested it out, I’ll post the pattern sometime soon!  I don’t think it is perfect by any means, but it is mine :)

Coming Soon...

  • The Lacy Girl Scarf I’m working on is almost finished… I will definitely have to block it (the edges are all rolled up), but I hope it will turn out well.  It is pretty much my own pattern (eek!) so hopefully you will like it!
  • I’ve also written a pattern repeat for the ‘diamond design’ that I posted last month… I plan on testing it very soon, so that will be up as well.  I’ll plan to give you a chart for that one, assuming it works :).
woohoo :)

Diamond Design, #6 - the winner.
Though… I have to admit that I still look at this and want to make some changes! Eek :) haha. Now I’ll need to see if I can put this motif in an actual pattern for a scarf or something!  At some point, ya’ll will see it again.  Also I did a really crappy job of blocking these…. OOPS.

Diamond Design

Ok, so I’ve been promising to tell you about following the design process on Knitty that I previously posted about…. I have a whole series of pictures for this one, but first let me tell you how this worked:

  1. Sketched out a rough estimate of what I wanted the design to look like, in this case an elongated diamond
  2. Broke out the graph paper and wrote out what my chart symbols would be
  3. Did my first test case of the design in the chart #1… this one was such a dissaster when I tried to knit it up, I couldn’t even save a swatch for you!
  4. Chart #2 was somewhat more successful, in that I had the stockinette properly outlined, however when I knitted it up it was tiny and not the right shape.
  5. Chart #3 was another dissaster of monstrous proportions… so no swatch
  6. Chart #4 was infinitely better than three… but again the wrong shape
  7. Chart #5 was entirely to long vertically and hence no good
  8. By the time I got to this point I had figured out the proportions a bit better, and Chart #6 seems to be perfecto.  It has the horizontally elongated look that I wanted and I was able to get the garter stitch inside the diamond to look right.

Honestly - this was both fun and a pain in the rear… but it taught me some valuable lessons about designing: have patience, constantly edit, & make sure to knit swatches.  I also realized that the proportions of graph paper (perfect little squares) are nothing like real stitches… a tall diamond on paper turns into short and squat after being knitted.  In the future I’ll keep these things in mind and MAYBE I’ll just end up with three charts… haha… not six!!

Charts... and how to read them

To help deal with my own ineptitude… this is a great link on reading charts! You might also find it relevant when I start babbling about creating my own over the next week or so :)
